3 Perfect Days in Nerja, Spain

If you’re looking for a destination in southern Spain that combines beautiful beaches, beautiful coastal scenery, charming old streets, and a relaxed atmosphere, Nerja might be exactly what you’re searching for.
On the eastern edge of the Costa del Sol, Nerja offers a different side of southern Spain. While nearby resort towns are known for large hotels and busy nightlife, Nerja has that traditional Andalusian charm. Whitewashed streets, dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and stunning Mediterranean views make it one of the most beautiful towns in the region.
For solo travelers, Nerja is an ideal destination. It’s walkable, safe, easy to navigate, and has enough activities to fill a long weekend without feeling rushed. Whether you want to spend your days discovering hidden beaches, wandering historic streets, or taking day trips into the mountains, Nerja offers plenty to do to fill a long weekend.
Here’s how I would spend three perfect solo days in one of Andalusia’s most beautiful coastal towns.

Day 1: Exploring Nerja’s Old Town and Beaches

Morning: Start at the Balcón de Europa

Start your day at the famous Balcón de Europa. It’s the image everybody knows about Nerja.  It’s the perfect photo spot, like a mini flower-lined promenade with some of the best views in the town. You can see out to the sea for miles. On a clear day it’s possible to see the mountains in Morocco on the horizon. Faint, but possible. I wasn’t that lucky, but hopefully you’ll have better luck than me.

Early in the morning is the best time to visit if you want to take photos at the Balćon, there are less people, but it’s also  the perfect place to watch the sunset. I suggest to get a glimpse in both morning and evening to see the difference.

From the Balcón, you can wander into Nerja’s historic center. The whitewashed streets are filled with flower-covered balconies, hidden courtyards, and small cafés that are perfect for a slow morning and sipping on a coffee.

Afternoon: Relax at Burriana Beach

After spending the morning exploring the old town, make your way down to Burriana Beach, the town’s most popular beach. The walk down to the beach has many viewpoints over the coastline before it opens up to a wide beach full of restaurants and cafés.

This is the perfect place to enjoy the evening. Grab lunch at one of the beachfront restaurants and have a leisurely meal, just as the Spanish do. Fresh seafood and paella are local favorites, and the sea views make it easy to linger and enjoy the day.

If you’re looking for a little activity, Burriana is also one of the best places in Nerja to rent a kayak or paddleboard. The coastline around town is full of small coves and cliffs that are best seen from the water. I decided to take a little kayak trip around the bay (check out the link here). The views were beautiful from the water and it was a great way to cool off. 

If you prefer to relax, simply find a spot on the sand and spend a few hours enjoying the sunshine. It’s a great place to people watch and enjoy the scenery around you.

Evening: Sunset Over the Mediterranean

As the day winds down, head back toward the center of town. The golden hour light creates a warm glow across the sea, perfect for photos. This is one of the most photogenic times of day, especially around the Balcón de Europa. 

Find a bench overlooking the water and watch the sunset alongside locals and fellow travelers. Street musicians often perform here in the evenings, adding to the atmosphere. It’s one of those simple travel moments that perfectly captures what  makes Nerja special. I ate ice cream and watched the most perfect sunset. Reminded me of Santorini, where everyone enjoys hanging out, relaxing, and just watching the sun go down.

After sunset, enjoy dinner in the old town. The narrow streets become lively as restaurants fill with diners and people gather in the plazas. Solo travelers will find Nerja welcoming, with plenty of outdoor terraces where you can enjoy a relaxed meal while soaking up the evening atmosphere.

Day 2: The Nerja Caves and the Coastline of Maro

Morning: Explore the Nerja Caves

Start your second day with one of the most impressive attractions in all of Andalusia: the Nerja Caves. Located just a few kilometers outside town, these enormous caves were discovered in 1959 by a group of local boys and quickly became one of Spain’s most important archaeological and geological sites.

As you descend into the caves, it’s hard not to be amazed by the scale of the chambers. Towering stalactites hang from the ceilings while massive rock formations rise from the cave floor. Some of the chambers are so large that concerts are occasionally held inside thanks to their incredible acoustics.

Even if you’ve visited caves before, the Nerja Caves feel different. The combination of prehistoric cave paintings, dramatic natural formations, and the size of the caverns makes this one of the most memorable experiences in the region. Plan to spend at least a couple of hours exploring before continuing on to your next stop.

Afternoon: Discover Maro and the Cliffs

After visiting the caves, head to the nearby village of Maro. Just a short drive from Nerja, Maro feels like a hidden corner of Andalusia that many visitors overlook. The small village is surrounded by farmland, mountains, and protected coastline, giving it a much quieter atmosphere than the beach towns nearby.

Spend some time wandering the peaceful streets before stopping for lunch at a local restaurant. This is the kind of place where life moves slowly, making it a wonderful escape from busier tourist destinations.

In the afternoon, make your way toward the cliffs of the Maro Cerro Gordo Natural Area. This protected stretch of coastline is one of the most beautiful in southern Spain. Rugged cliffs plunge into crystal clear water while hidden coves and beaches sit tucked between the rocks.

This is another one of the places you can join a kayak tour. Paddling along the coastline allows you to explore sea caves, waterfalls, and secluded beaches that can’t be reached by road. For solo travelers, it’s an easy activity to join and often becomes one of the highlights of a trip to Nerja.

Evening: Dinner Along the Coast

Return to Nerja in the late afternoon and take some time to freshen up before dinner. After a day spent exploring caves and coastline, the relaxed atmosphere of the town feels especially inviting.

For your final evening in town, consider choosing a restaurant with views of the Mediterranean. As the sun begins to set, the coastline takes on a golden glow, creating one of the most beautiful scenes in Nerja.

After dinner, enjoy a leisurely walk through the old town. The evenings here are wonderfully relaxed. Locals gather in the plazas, families stroll through the streets, and visitors linger over drinks long after sunset. It’s the perfect way to end a day of exploring.

Day 3: A Day Trip to Frigiliana

Morning: Wander One of Spain’s Most Beautiful Villages

Just fifteen minutes from Nerja sits Frigiliana, a village that is often considered one of the most beautiful in Spain. Sitting on a hillside overlooking both the Mediterranean and the surrounding mountains, Frigiliana offers a completely different atmosphere from the coast.

Arrive early and spend the morning exploring the village’s historic Moorish quarter. Narrow cobblestone streets wind between bright white houses decorated with colorful flowers, creating postcard worthy views around nearly every corner.

One of the best things to do in Frigiliana is simply wander the city and soak it all in. Unlike larger cities where attractions dominate the itinerary, the charm here lies in getting lost among the streets and discovering quiet viewpoints, hidden staircases, and peaceful plazas.

Afternoon: Scenic Views and a Long Andalusian Lunch

By midday, you’ll likely find yourself stopping frequently to admire the views. Frigiliana’s elevated location providing perfect panoramas of the surrounding countryside and coastline.

Take your time exploring some of the village’s higher viewpoints before having lunch at one of the terraces overlooking the valley. This is a perfect opportunity to slow down and embrace the Andalusian pace of life.

After lunch, continue exploring the quieter parts of the village. Browse local artisan shops, enjoy a coffee in one of the small plazas, or simply find a shaded bench and watch daily life unfold around you.

Solo travelers often find Frigiliana particularly enjoyable because it feels safe, relaxed, and easy to explore independently. There is no pressure to rush from attraction to attraction. Instead, the village encourages you to slow down and appreciate the small details.

I drove to Frigiliana in the morning, it was already buzzing with people. Parking can be difficult since there aren’t really any designated parking ramps, most of the parking is street parking and it’s limited. 

This is the time where I tell you my story about driving in this little city. Roads aren’t marked very well when you get into the city and the streets are tiny and I ended up going the wrong way on a one way street. I got the car stuck in one of the side streets trying to turn around. Since I was unable to turn the car around and couldn’t continue up the one way street, I asked a local for help and he backed up the car all the way down the hill. 

Embarrassing? Maybe, but I would have definitely hit something trying to go backwards all the way down a hill anyway so I guess the embarrassment is a passing moment anyway. This is another reason I love Spain, the locals. Always willing to help. Asking a stranger to drive your car and he just jumps in and backed up the car all the way down the hill, only in Spain.

Evening: Return to Nerja for One Last Sunset

As afternoon turns to evening, make your way back to Nerja for one final sunset by the sea.

This is a wonderful opportunity to revisit your favorite spot from earlier in the trip, whether that’s the Balcón de Europa, Burriana Beach, or one of the smaller coves tucked beneath the cliffs.

Watching the sun disappear into the Mediterranean provides a fitting ending to a few days in one of Andalusia’s most charming coastal towns. The combination of beautiful beaches, dramatic landscapes, traditional villages, and relaxed Spanish culture is what makes Nerja such a rewarding destination.

If you have an extra day in Nerja or simply want to slow the pace and see more of the surrounding area? There are a few experiences that are worth adding to your itinerary. One of the biggest advantages of staying in Nerja is how easy it is to combine beach time with nature, hiking, and nearby villages without spending hours traveling.

Hike the Río Chíllar Gorge

One of the most popular outdoor activities near Nerja is the hike through the Río Chíllar Gorge. Unlike a typical mountain trail, this route follows the river itself, which means you’ll spend much of the hike walking through shallow water surrounded by towering canyon walls.

The scenery is beautiful and refreshing, especially during the warmer months when the cool river water provides relief from the Andalusian heat. The trail passes through narrow gorges, small waterfalls, and natural pools, making it feel more like an adventure than a standard hike.

A few things to keep in mind before going:

• Wear water shoes or sturdy sandals with grip.
• Bring plenty of water and snacks.
• Start early in summer to avoid the hottest part of the day.

This is a great option for travelers who want to balance Nerja’s relaxed beach atmosphere with a more active day in nature.

Visit Another White Village

Frigiliana is the most famous nearby village, but if you have extra time, consider exploring more of Andalusia’s inland towns. Villages like Competa or Canillas de Albaida offer the same whitewashed charm with even fewer crowds and beautiful mountain scenery.

These towns are ideal for a relaxed afternoon of wandering, photography, and enjoying a long lunch with local wine and tapas.

Enjoy a Slower Beach Day

Sometimes the best use of extra time in Nerja is simply doing less. The town has several smaller beaches and coves beyond Burriana, including Playa Carabeo, Playa El Salón, and Playa Calahonda.

These quieter spots are perfect for reading, swimming, and soaking up the Mediterranean atmosphere without a packed schedule. Nerja is one of those destinations where slowing down often becomes the highlight of the trip.
