Day 1: Arrival in Göreme
Since this is a short trip you’re going to want to hit the ground running and get going as soon as you get in. In Cappadocia, you can stay in a cave hotel. I was told many of the old cave houses have now been turned into hotels. My hotel was cozy and cute. It reminded me of a little rustic hotel in the wilderness. It was comfortable, nice and simple.
Some highly recommended hotels in the area:
- Sultan Cave Suites – Famous for its rooftop views.
- Aydinli Cave Hotel – A family-run gem with warm hospitality
After dropping your bags and checking in, head to the Göreme Open Air Museum. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with ancient cave churches and frescos which are carved and painted into the volcanic rock.
Make sure you visit the Dark Church, as it’s known for its beautiful artwork. Next you can walk to the El Nazar and Tokali churches to see more stunning frescos.

In the evening make sure you get a good spot for your first sunset. You can climb up to Göreme Sunset Point or take a guided hike through Red Valley for an amazing view of the changing colors of the rocks. After sunset you can get your first taste of traditional Turkish food. There are many restaurants in the city to choose from. All the food I had over the weekend did not disappoint.

Day 2: Balloons, Valleys & the Underground City
Start your day early, our pick-up time was 4:00AM. The company we went with stopped and picked up a bagged breakfast (nice touch) while we were on our way. I was too excited and anxious to eat anything, but it was a nice snack after the balloon ride.
The ride was amazing and well worth the money. It was like a dream. We had a few minutes to take pictures while we waited for them to blow up our balloon. You can fit like 20 people in the basket, but I got a corner (I read this was the best place to be) and the views were stunning. Floating over the landscape was unbelievable. It was my first time in a hot air balloon.
Check out the hot air balloon experience here.

I would make sure you have at least 2 or 3 days in Cappadocia because the balloon rides are weather permitting and our first day was canceled due to the wind. When I was in Egypt the same thing happened, canceled because of the wind. I was disappointed, but I knew I was going to Türkiye so I wasn’t heart broken. I would have been devastated if I wasn’t able to go in Cappadocia. Watching what seems like hundreds of colorful hot air balloons float above the fairy chimneys is an unforgettable experience. Bucket list for me, for sure.

After your exciting morning and after a little lunch you can head to the Underground City. These ancient cities were built thousands of years ago and used for shelter during invasions. They have lots of nooks and crannies and I would recommend a guided tour to avoid getting lost and learning a little bit more about the city.

Next, you can explore one of the valleys in Cappadocia. Walk along the rock shaped chimneys and admire the landscape, which looks like nothing you’ve ever seen. Monks once lived in these unique towers. The rock formations look different to each person and we all saw different things. While one sees an animal, the other sees a person. It was fun!

Then have another delicious dinner before an early turn in. I was exhausted from being up so early in the morning. I looked at some of my photos and fell quickly asleep.
Day 3: Castles, Pottery & a Peaceful Goodbye
On your last morning, visit Uçhisar Castle, the highest point in Cappadocia. Climb to the top for panoramic views across the entire region. There are many ancient tunnels carved in the rock and it’s interesting to see.

In the afternoon we went to Avanos, a little town known for its pottery making. At the workshop I was able to have a little lesson and use the wheel myself. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to make anything on my own, as it was my first time and the guide helped mold my hands and spin the wheel for me. The shop has a lot of beautiful hand made souvenirs to take home for yourself or as gifts.

Then evening comes and you have to leave this beautiful city behind. It was an epic trip. It will stay in my mind forever. I could easily spend a day or two more, but I needed to see more of Türkiye. I loved Istanbul as well. Check out my post.
